Advanced Technologies and Treatments
Computer-assisted surgery Saint Mary's Orthopedic Services leads the way with computer-assisted surgery. Currently only available in West Michigan at Saint Mary's, this innovative, high-tech surgery is revolutionizing joint replacement. During surgery, a customized computer model provides optimal visualization of both the joint and the instruments used. The surgery is usually less invasive and less painful — providing faster recovery and greater assurance of long-lasting results.
Reverse shoulder replacement surgery Performed for the first time at Saint Mary's, reverse shoulder replacement surgery is used when other shoulder surgeries have failed. Most often, it is used for failed rotator cuff surgeries and failed shoulder replacements. Candidates typically are older patients who have exhausted other surgical options. Saint Mary's is one of the few hospitals in the U.S. to have performed this surgery.
"Ream and Run" surgery Only a few physicians in the country can perform a new shoulder surgery coined "Ream and Run," and Saint Mary's is the first to offer it in West Michigan. This surgical technique offers hope for athletes by using the patient's own shoulder socket rather than an artificial socket. Athletes gain a greater range of shoulder motion and see longer-lasting results than with traditional replacement surgery.
Artificial disc replacement Saint Mary's is at the forefront of technology offering artificial spinal disc replacement surgery. The surgery typically lasts only two-and-a-half hours and involves the insertion of an artificial disc through a small opening in the patient's abdomen. The surgery is for patients who have a degenerative disc with considerable pain and no other complicating factors such as arthritis or spinal deformity. The greatest benefit of this surgery over traditional spinal fusion is sustained range of motion and flexibility. Read the article in MD News.

"Get Up and Move It" Program
"Get Up and Move It!" at Saint Mary's has worked wonders for our hip and knee replacement patients. The program is designed around the premise that patients who have undergone these surgeries are well, not sick, and it encourages them to "act well." All patients take their meals out of bed and participate in group physical therapy beginning on their first post-operative day. The result: shortened hospital stays, less pain and faster recovery times.
