Corporate Partner Spotlight: Why We Donate

Tom Welch, President & CEO Fifth Third Bank Western Michigan

"Mercy Health Saint Mary’s shares our values and we are truly grateful for the work it does to promote wellness in our communities each day. As a bank, Fifth Third places a unique emphasis on health. Whether it’s financial health through the series of child and adult financial educational programs, vocational health through our NextJob program to find our unemployed customers work, or physical and emotional health through goal-based events like the Fifth Third River Bank Run, we aim to help our communities achieve health in all areas of life.

The importance of West Michigan’s health goes much deeper than the truism, “healthy communities equal healthy businesses.” While we wouldn’t disagree, our team is so much more than bankers – we are neighbors, soccer coaches, parents and volunteers. We’re invested here because we live here, play here and work here. West Michigan is our home.

While Fifth Third and Mercy Health provide two very different services, we share the same values. As partners, we work together to encourage health of the whole person. Financial health and physical health are both very important, and together we are committed to ensuring our community has access to both.

Fifth Third has had a huge impact on our community with so many different initiatives. During 2013, Fifth Third invested nearly $39.5 million in affordable housing projects throughout Michigan, and provided more than $3.4 million in charitable community investments across the state. Beyond our financial commitment to the community, Fifth Third employees taught financial education programs to nearly 8,800 K-12th graders in nearly 100 schools and provided financial education to more than 14,500 adults. Yet the number I’m most proud of is that Fifth Third employees contributed more than 25,000 hours of board service and volunteer activities to over 500 non-profits across the state. The reason this number is so important to me is because it’s evidence that investing in the community isn’t just a corporate commitment, it’s a team commitment.

I believe corporations, like citizens, have an obligation to contribute to the well-being of the community. In human terms, a healthy relationship requires each party to give and take, which results in harmony and well-being. In a healthy community, it’s much the same. Fifth Third is grateful to be part of the communities we are in, and so it’s natural for us to give back."
